The Parasite -- Gnathostomiasis
This is a parasitic infection that goes by the name “Gnathostomiasis”, and the main cause for it is a larvae or worms. Mostly people from Southeast Asia are suffering rom this unpleasant disease or infection. Most commonly this infection is triggered by eating too much of the listed foods below:
- Raw or uncooked freshwater fish
Symptoms and Signs
If you got affected by this infection the first thing you will notice is a little swelling under the skin. And some of the following signs below in the list:
- Right upper quadrant or abdominal pain
These sings or symptoms mostly occur 24 hours after you have eaten some of the foods.
The larvae or the worm is migrating through our body, therefore the person who is infected will feel pain when the worm moves inside. Eve though that this disease is rare, the parasite inside the body is able to penetrate other tissues in our body, such as our nerves, our liver, our eye, or spinal cord, which then can result in blindness or sudden loss of vision, or sometimes the parasite is able to penetrate our brain which will result in a lot of nerve pain, coma, paralysis and then death.
Check the video below in which Dr. Greger is sharing real life cases with this disease and gives more information about the infection!
