Is Artificial Sweetener Poisoning You

The Aspartame is also known as Equal or NutraSweet, and it is in the group of most toxic substances that are regularly consumed by a lot of people. Today this artificial sweetener is added into more than 4,000 products all over the world, and it is one of the most tested product or additive on the list of tested ingredients by the FDA. While many manufacturers are claiming that the aspartame is not harmful for your health and it means no threat, the scientists and the studies are not saying the same thing. This additive is massively consumed all across the globe, and many studies have shown that it has metabolic, neurotoxic, carcinogenic and allergenic effects. Before you think of how this additive is still not banned, first take a look at the amount of money that is received from its sale every year. When you see how much money is that, you will understand why this artificial sweetener is not banned and reached the status of a Big Tobacco. With that much money coming from its sale, the truth is suffering same as the health of the people who consume it, and the number of users of this additive rises every day.

The Ingredients

James Schlatter, who was a chemist for G.D. Searle accidentally developed a drug that was anti-ulcer and had stumbled upon the aspartame, this happened in 1965. The drug was made from 10% methanol, 50% phenylalanine and 40% aspartic acid. The aspartame is actually 200 times sweeter than the natural sugar.

One of the most controversial ingredients inside the aspartame is the methanol, also known as wood alcohol. There is a research that concluded this ingredient should be considered a poison that is cumulative, because of its low rate of excretion the moment it gets absorbed. When methanol gets inside our body it oxidates and becomes formic acid and formaldehyde. Both metabolites are considered to be highly toxic, and this happens when the temperature of methanol reaches 30 degrees C (86 degrees F).

This is a well known product that is found inside aspartame, and it can cause a lot of birth defects, it can interfere with the DNA replications and cause a lot of retinal damage. In a liter of aspartame sweetened beverage, there are 56 mg of methanol contained, which is 7 times more than the limit. Mostly the problems that occur due to methanol poisoning are vision problems, such as progressive contraction of visual fields, misty vision, obscuration of vision, blurring of vision, retinal damage and sometimes even blindness.

This is an amino acid that can be mostly found in our brain. According to many studies the levels of this acid are rapidly elevated by the regular consumption of aspartame. The levels of serotonin can be dangerously decreased with the too much intake of phenylalanine, which can easily cause the development of schizophrenia, depression and make you prone to seizures.

G.D. Searle done a few studies on lab mice, have proven that the use of this product for humans is totally safe. Besides that, Louis J. Elsas II, M.D, Director of Medical Genetics and Profesor of Pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine said to the United States Senate in 1987 that “Humans are not metabolizing the phenylalanine that much effectively as the lower species such as the lab mice that the study was performed on, therefore that theory is irrelevant”. But sadly this warning went into deaf ears, and the testings that were supposed to be done were avoided.

Aspartic Acid

The aspartate is inside our brain and has the role of a neurotransmitter, and it transfers information from one neuron to another. The larger amount of aspartate will allow calcium to stack up inside our brain cells, which will cause the development of free radicals that are able to kill those brain cells. The aspartate is considered to be an “excitotoxin”, only because it has the ability to cause damage to the nerve cells. Being exposed to this excitotoxin for a long period can cause the development of many serious illnesses and diseases, such as memory loss, brain lesions, dementia, hypoglycemia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, hearing loss, hormonal imbalances, ALS, multiple sclerosis, and neuroendocrine disorders as well.

A neuroscientists called Dr. John Olney, who was also one of the best excitotoxins experts of all time has informed the G.D Searle in 1971 that the wholes in the brains of the lab mice were caused by the aspartic acid. The FDA was not informed by the Searle about this research, until 1981, the year when aspartame was approved. This is also another event that in the pattern of deception and lies.
