What’s The Difference Between Turmeric, Curcumin and What Are Their Health Benefits?

Everybody is familiar with the golden spice, which mostly is used in the Indian kitchen, we’re talking about the turmeric. Mostly it got its fame from its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Did you know that all of the health benefits that can be provided from the turmeric, is due to its active compound called curcumin? Therefore you can get rid of the turmeric pills, and replace them with curcumin capsules. And here is why you should do that.

Turmeric & Curcumin

The turmeric is one of the oldest, and most famous spices of all time. It was used nearly 4,000 years ago, and mostly people were using it in religious ceremonies or as a culinary spice. Also in Southeast Asia, especially in India it was used for many medicinal purposes as well. The turmeric spice is made from the rhizome of the plant turmeric or from the plant’s roots, and it is rich in many healthy components, and one of the best and most beneficial agents are the so called curcuminoids, and he curcumin is one of them.

There are numerous studies on the turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties, which are coming from the high content in curcumin. Many people who were dealing with cardiovascular diseases, cancer, asthma, arthritis, psoriasis, irritable bowel disease and rheumatoid have found their relief in the turmeric and many clinical trials have shown that it is effective!

Even though that the curcumin is contained in very small amounts in the turmeric, it is still very effective, and according to Dr. Josh Axe’s researches who is a founder of the Ancient Nutrition and Dr.Axe as well, it was concluded that the curcimin is only taking 3% of the turmeric’s weight, and 90% of his studies contain a high amount of curcumin in them.

He reported “If you use turmeric by adding it in some of your meals and cooking, it will be impossible to get the same amount of curcumin as the one that was used in his studies”.

Therefore you should be aware that these are two very different ingredients, we are talking about the spice which is full of nutrients besides that active agent, and we are talking only about the active compound that we call curcimin.

Why Curcumin May Be Where It’s Now?

The Chief of scientific affairs and education for Terry Naturally, Cheryl Myers is using a wonderful analogy for the natural medicines and dietary supplements. She says that the hamburger is full of iron. But besides that, if someone wants to intake more iron in order to treat anemia, doesn’t mean that dozen of hamburgers are needed to treat the anemia. The same is with the turmeric, because the curcumin is contained inside it.

Also it doesn’t mean that taking the curcumin on its own, will provide the expected health benefits. A nutrition expert and a registered nurse as well, Stacy Tucker is noting that the turmeric spice contains many other ingredients that have the ability to boost the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, including turmerone and many other alkaloids, therefore it wouldn’t be wise to only focus on the curcumin.

According to many experts the curcumin is a lot more effective, and bioavailable if you consume it mixed with black pepper or piperine, which is the alkaloid that is responsible for the pungency of the pepper. There are some other supplements along with the piperine, therefore when you cook turmeric, it would be good to add a little bit of black pepper.

Also there are many other supplements which are using many different turmeric components (mostly turmerone -- essential oil extracted from the turmeric root), therefore you get more benefits from the plant by taking these supplements, than consuming the whole root.

What’s The Bottom Line?

Health experts recommend using supplements that containing higher amounts of curcuminoids and piperine as well, that way will be provided most benefits.

“Most of the commercial curcumin supplements that are available on the market, which are made from the turmeric root contain higher amounts of curcumin” -- reported Dr. Axe. Therefore it is clear why these supplements will show far more better effects, than the consumption of the turmeric alone!

Before you take any turmeric supplements, it would be wise to consult with a specialist, therefore you will know that the ingredients you intake will be used properly by your body, and does your body need those ingredients.
