The Essential Oils Anyone With Edema Needs to Have at Home

The main cause of swollen feet, knees and legs is mostly happening when fluids are being trapped in our lower limbs, therefore they are unable to circulate through our whole body. This issue is called Edema, it can be life-threatening and it may cause more serious illnesses.

If you want to treat swollen limbs, you can use essential oils for long massages, it will prevent you from it. Be very careful when you try some treatments to prevent from swollen limbs, you can make it even worse than it was before.

Essential Oils for Swelling

1. Chamomile Oil

If you want to treat poison ivy, try using Chamomile, it contains a lot of anti-inflammatory properties. It is also widely used for treatment of swollen limbs. Simply, apply few drops directly on the area of the swelling, and massage it gently until the swelling goes down a bit.

Also you may apply it on a cotton pad or a damp cloth and gently do the massaging by yourself, it is very relaxing and has a very nice smell, you should try it.

2. Lavender Oil

Same as the other oils it is mostly used for relieving from swelling or pain. Directly apply it to the area where the swelling is and massage gently and make circular movements. Continue massaging until the swelling reduces or until the pain goes away.

3. Tea Tree Oil

Unlike other oils, it doesn’t need to be mixed with other essential oils to use it. You can directly apply to your swollen area or your skin. Apply a few drops on the area, and massage like you want to push the swelling out, but be very gentle, your movements should be from the feet towards the knees, that will spread the buildup fluid. It is recommended to use it twice a day, and you will see the effects yourself, the swelling will reduce and completely go away after a while.

4. Juniper Oil

It is a well known and most common used oil for swelling and pain relief. It will help you spread the trapped and buildup fluid in your body, and that will prevent you from these issues. Soak your feet in a hot tub of water that has added a few drops of this oil inside it. Don’t put a lot of Juniper oil in the tub, because if you have a sensitive skin, it may cause a lot of trouble or irritate your skin or even burn it.

5. Fennel Oil

Mostly mixed with other essential oils, Fennel oil is also used to reduce swelling or prevent from it. Mix 30 ml of evening primrose oil with a few drops of fennel oil and 15 drops of each cypress oil. If you massage the area with this mixture, by directly adding a few drops on it, this will prevent you from the swelling to get worse, and will reduce it or even make it go away. Use it twice a day, and after a while you will experience the effects.

6. Geranium Oil

It prevents from skin irritation and inflammation, also it is called Rose Geranium Oil, its use is very simple. In your bath add a couple of drops and simply stay in it a little bit longer, this will make the buildup fluid spread through your body, and will reduce any swelling that you have, and prevent from stuck fluids in your limbs. You may also make a mix of this oil with carrier oil and add it directly to the swollen areas. It is also used to treat acne, bug bites, cold sores and hemorrhoids.

How to Use Essential Oils for Swelling

1. Lemongrass, Grapefruit and Cypress Blend

If you want to reduce skin inflammation or prevent from it use these three oils and get effects in only two minutes. Mix sunflower oil, with two tablespoons of melted coconut or canola oil as carrier oil. And put in the mixture 2 or 3 drops of each of these three oils.

Put a few drops of each of these oils mix them well. When the mixture becomes homogenous take 10 drops of the mixture and put them in a carrier oil. Then mix that as well, when it is mixed well, apply the mixture directly on your swollen area and massage them very gently for 10 minutes or so. To improve your blood flow, put your feet up on the wall or something while you are massaging. You can massage 2-3 times daily, for better effects.

2. Wintergreen Essential Oil Soak

It is not very popular, but Wintergreen essential oil is the best for swelling, or pain relief. It is a very strong oil, so put 2 to 3 drops into hot water. Also adding 5-8 drops of lemongrass, cypress, geranium, peppermint, or even lavender oils and you will have the wintergreen essential oil. You can then soak your feet into the water for about 10 minutes or so, and do this about 3 times a day. You can also rub your feet with the oil to prevent from swelling. It prevents from swollen ankles too. Be careful not to use this oil for swollen feet, it will make things even worse.

Drink more water to be hydrated all the time, and the salt will extract from your body

  • Don’t wear tight clothes, it will prevent from blood flow problems into your limbs
  • Taking in a lot of sodium through foods will increase the chance of swelling
  • Since epsom salt has anti inflammatory properties, use it in your bath to reduce your swelling

When to Call Your Doctor

Be very aware, swelling may be giving you a sign of kidney, hear or even a liver problems. Consult your doctor or a specialist if you are experiencing unusual things like chest pain, fever, shortness of breath etc. Or if you have a swelling and the area around the swelling os hotter than other parts, consult with a specialist or a doctor right a way, it is not a thing to play with.
